A few people conduct daily surveys recording otter activity at one convenient spot every day, usually a sprainting stone. Others monthly surveys on their allocated patch using selected sites. There is an annual 2 day coordinated Survey, initiated in 1995 by James Williams. It takes place at the end of April, whilst vegetation is still low and rainfall not prohibitive. The whole of Somerset is surveyed in a single weekend, providing a snapshot of otter activity on a single night.
